Avengers #29

So this is a joke, right? I mean, I’m as excited about Walt Simonson working on modern comics as the next guy, but this is the story? This is exactly the same content that appeared in Wolverine & the X-Men #12 with only a few changes in dialogue. That was two issues ago for that title, and we’re well beyond that status quo in the overall crossover. I can see how this might be a stronger chapter if you had never read that other issue, but I have, and this issue pales in comparison. Heck, the strongest part of the fight was the smack talk between Iceman and Beast, and that’s eliminated here.

Instead, this wraps up with a Professor X dues ex machina mind-blast. Another cop out ending that doesn’t really affect the ongoing AvX narrative.

Simonson does a nice job with what he has; his distinctive style works really well on Thor, Spider-Woman, and Captain America. He can’t save that Hawkeye costume, but at least Hawk looks like a hero.

I’m just kind of surprised this book is so recycled. Here's a hint: if you're intrigued by seeing the Avengers fight the X-Men as they try to take down Rachel Grey, buy Wolverine & the X-Men #12.
